Growth Groups on Mission: Using One More Disciple Together

Part 4 of the “One More Disciple” Blog Series
By Josh Smith

So far in this series, we’ve asked you to identify your One Disciple, introduced the I-4 Rhythms, and equipped you to share the gospel with clarity and compassion. But you aren’t meant to do this alone.

God gave us His church—real people, real community—not just to grow in faith, but to live on mission together. Evangelism can be slow. It can be hard. It can be discouraging. But when your Growth Group commits to the mission as a team, evangelism becomes sustainable, joyful, and powerful.

One More Disciple isn’t only for individuals. It’s designed for groups.

Your Growth Group can be more than a Bible study. It can be a team on mission—united around the call to make more and better disciples.

Practicing I-4 as a Growth Group

Intercede Daily

Prayer fuels mission. Encourage each group member to pray daily for their One Disciple—but don’t stop there. As a group, pray for each other’s One Disciples by name. Focus on one person per day, or carve out time in your weekly meetings to intercede together. When prayer becomes regular, evangelism becomes a rhythm.

Invest Weekly

Take time each week for accountability and encouragement. Ask, “How did you invest in your One Disciple this week?” Celebrate small wins—a text, a coffee, a handshake across the fence. These small steps matter. When you talk about evangelism consistently, it becomes normal.

Invite Monthly

Once a month, turn your weekly meeting into a party. Assign someone to plan something fun and easy to invite others to—like a bonfire, game night, or backyard BBQ. Your One Disciple doesn’t only need to hear a sermon—they need to see Christian love in action. Hospitality lays the groundwork for the gospel.

Introduce Naturally

Keep looking for ways to invite your One Disciple to church—especially during holidays, baptisms, or relatable sermon series. You might also go through an evangelistic study as a group, like The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus, and invite your One Disciples to join. Sharing the gospel is easier when you’re doing it together.

Using the Growth Group Structure

Your Growth Group already has rhythms and roles. Here’s how they naturally support the mission of One More Disciple:

Group Rhythms
  • Meet Weekly – Keep the gospel mission central to your prayer, fellowship, and study.
  • Party Monthly – Use group parties as your Invite Monthly opportunities.
  • Serve Quarterly – Plan outreach projects to build relationships in the community.
  • Rest Seasonally – Use seasonal breaks to recharge—and keep praying for your One Disciple.
Group Roles & Responsibilities

In growth groups, there are some roles that are designated—they are always the same.

  • Leader – Sets the pace by modeling the I-4 Rhythms and pointing conversations toward mission.
  • Host – Creates a welcoming environment, helps coordinate group life, and helps care for any guests or newcomers.

There are also responsibilities that can be shared between group members.

  • Weekly Greeter – Builds a warm first impression for new faces.
  • Prayer Warrior – Keeps track of names and leads the group in intercession.
  • Party Planner – Organizes monthly hangouts that are low-pressure and outreach-friendly.
  • Service Organizer – Plans quarterly projects that connect the group to local needs.

Each role, each responsibility plays a part. When shared well, they help evangelism become part of your group’s DNA—not an afterthought.

Commissioned as a Group

Growth Groups are for all of life. To follow Jesus is to be sent—into your neighborhoods, your workplaces, your coffee shops, your schools—with the gospel on your lips and love in your hands.

You already have everything you need:

  • The Word of God
  • The People of God
  • The Spirit of God
  • The Commission of God

Live the Great Commission Together

Read Matthew 28:18–20 together this week. These are not my words. They are Christ’s.

Jesus is the one who sends. He has the authority. He gives the command. And He promises to go with us.

Let His words commission you—not just individually, but together.

Add one I-4 Rhythm each of the next four months. Start small. But start. The mission is too important to delay—and the joy of seeing someone come to Christ is worth every awkward moment, every unanswered text, and every long prayer.

Let’s make more and better disciples—starting with just One More Disciple.
